Byron Bay Drainage Upgrade

The primary goal of the drainage upgrade is to reduce the impacts of flooding to residents and businesses throughout Byron Bay's town centre.

The upgrade has begun and stage one of construction in the Town Centre Catchment will run until November 2026 (weather permitting).

Announcement : The intersection at Jonson Street and Byron Street in Byron Bay is closed. Please use detour routes.

Byron Creek Bridge repair

The Byron Creek Bridge on Bangalow Road was damaged on Friday 9 January 2026 after a fire underneath the bridge.

It is currently open to vehicles up to 6.5 tonnes.

Repairs need to be made to the bridge before heavier vehicles can use it.

Byron Street pedestrian crossing - Bangalow

A new pedestrian crossing has been built at Byron Street in Bangalow, near the All Souls Anglican Church.

The crossing is built on a raised hump and has a flat top so people can walk safely and easily from one side of the road to the other side.

Announcement : Construction of the raised crossing is complete.

Clifford Street intersection safety measures

In late 2024 Council received funding to install traffic signals at the intersection of Clifford Street and Broken Head Road at Suffolk Park.

In September 2025 Councillors resolved not to go ahead with project.

Instead, staff will seek funding to produce concept plans for a mini roundabout option and a standard roundabout option.

Coopers Creek Road

We are repairing damage on Coopers Creek Road Caused by the 2022 flood event. This work includes culverts, landslips and pavement works.

Announcement : RCC Civil will undertake culvert works from Tuesday 7 April near 97, 135 and 159 Coopers Creek Road.

Works are expected to finish by mid‑May (weather permitting).

Please expect delays of up to 30 minutes and drive safely.

Coopers Lane culvert repairs

We have completed repairs to the Coopers Lane culvert in Main Arm that was damaged during the 2022 floods.

Coopers Shoot & Picadilly Hill Road Shoulder Repairs

We are repairing sections of road and drainage on Coopers Shoot and Picadilly Hill Road from damage caused in the 2022 flood event.

This project is due to start early to mid 2026.

Fixing potholes in the Byron Shire

A list of roads scheduled for pothole patching and repair in the coming weeks.

Flood restoration works - Minor landslips pack 17

We are repairing minor landslips caused by the 2022 floods. This includes landslides on Goonengerry Road, Main Arm Road, The Pocket Road, Left Bank Road and Frasers Road. This package of works is known as pack 17.

Announcement : WORKS DELAYED due to wet weather.

Works on Goonengerry Road, north of Goonengerry Mill Road, will now start Monday 4 May.

Construction will take four to six weeks. The road will be reduced to one lane.

Gloria Street Drainage Upgrade

Council has upgraded drainage at Gloria Street, South Golden Beach (west of Yelgun Creek).

This follows an upgrade of drainage on Gloria Street (east of Yelgun Creek), which was completed in 2025.

Announcement : Drainage on Gloria Street (west of Yelgun Creek) has now been upgraded.
