Parking Permits

Get a parking permit to park in our pay-parking areas in Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay. 

Time limits apply. Check the signs.

This permit does not apply in NSW National Parks car parks.

Step 1.Before you start

Have your documents ready. Most permits will need to provide:

  1. Current car registration.
  2. Proof of residency within the Byron Shire.
  3. Copy of your Pensioner or Concession card.

Step 2.Visit the Parking Permit Portal

  • Apply or renew a permit
  • Change your number plate
  • Check your details.

Step 3.Wait for approval

  • Your permit is not valid until you receive email confirmation. 
  • Approval and renewal emails from DoNotReply@orikan.tech may end up in your junk folder. Please check and mark them as safe.

Your permit is digital. You do not need to display it or pay at the meter. Just park and walk away.

Visit our customer service counter 70 Station Street, Mullumbimby and bring the following:

  1. Current car registration.
  2. Proof of residency within the Byron Shire.
  3. Copy of your Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card.

Shire Resident Parking Permit - $30 

For people who live in Byron Shire

Proof you live in Byron Shire

  • Current driver’s licence showing Byron Shire address or
  • Current vehicle registration certificate showing Byron Shire address.  

Proof of vehicle ownership

  • Current vehicle registration certificate with full name and residential address of applicant. 
  • If the vehicle is owned by and registered to a company, check the Terms and Conditions(PDF, 1MB)

Pension or Concession Parking Permit - Free 

For people who live in Byron Shire and hold a current Centrelink concession or student card. 

Proof you live in Byron Shire

  • Current driver’s licence showing Byron Shire address or
  • Current vehicle registration certificate showing Byron Shire address.  

Proof of concession

  • Current and valid Centrelink Concession Card including:  
    • Pension Card (Blue Card)  
    • Health Care Card  
    • Commonwealth Senior Health Card  
    • Low Income Health Care Card  
  • Current vehicle registration certificate that notes your pensioner status
  • Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) Gold Card  
  • Valid Student Card issued by an accredited educational institution.  

Proof of vehicle ownership

  • Current vehicle registration certificate with full name and residential address of applicant 
  • If the vehicle is owned by and registered to a company, check the Terms and Conditions(PDF, 1MB)

Non-Resident Ratepayer - $110 

For people who own property in Byron Shire but do not live here. 

Proof that you are a Byron Shire ratepayer

  • Rates notice - If the name on the permit application matches the rates notice, only vehicle ownership documents are needed (as we can verify property ownership).  
  • If the property is owned by a company provide evidence of company ownership, trust interest, or joint ownership. 

Proof of vehicle ownership

  • Current vehicle registration certificate with full name and residential address of applicant.

Border Communities Parking Permit - $110 

For people who live in one of the following areas outside the Byron Shire:

Proof you live in a Border Community

  • Current driver’s licence showing address
  • Current vehicle registration certificate showing address.  

Proof of vehicle ownership

  • Current vehicle registration certificate with full name and residential address of applicant.

Worker or Volunteer Parking Permit - $120 

For people who work or volunteer at an organisation with a fixed address within a Byron Shire Council pay parking area. 

Proof of employment

  • Payslip or  
  • Letter of employment or volunteer agreement. Check the terms and conditions for more details. 

Proof of vehicle ownership

  • Current vehicle registration certificate with full name and address of the applicant. 
  • If the vehicle is owned by and registered to a company, check the Terms and Conditions(PDF, 1MB)

Business Permit$120 for 12-months

For business owners based within the pay parking area. 

  • Current vehicle registration certificate
  • Proof of Business Location - for example, a current lease agreement or utilities bill (within last 3 months) that shows your business address.

Temporary Business Parking Permit - $120 for 3 months

For a business, activity, or service within a pay parking area.

  • The permit applies within 200m of the business, activity or service stated in a supporting letter.
  • There is a limit of 5 permits/vehicles per business, activity, or service.

Traffic Area Permits

Free

Traffic Area Permits allow you to park in a timed space or a pay parking space, within close proximity of your place of residence, for free, and for as long as you need.

Residents who live in the following parking areas are eligible for a Traffic Area Permit. A maximum of two vehicles per household can be exempt at any one time.

  • Bayshore Drive
  • Belongil
  • BH1 - includes Brunswick Heads CBD and surrounds (Tweed Street, Park Street).
  • BH2 - includes Brunswick Heads East (South Beach Road and South Beach Lane).
  • Butler Street precinct
  • Schools’ precinct
  • Tennyson/Massinger precinct
  • Wategos precinct.

Traffic Area Permits cannot be used in the pay parking area unless the residential address is located within the pay parking area. 

For visitors 

You must update your permit with the licence plate for your visitor’s vehicle using the permit portal. Once updated the vehicle will be covered immediately.

  1. Select the 'update vehicle' button.
  2. Enter the details.  

Terms and conditions - Traffic Area Permits

  • You must be a long-term resident, not a guest at hotel, hostel, or holiday unit.
  • You must have limited or no off-street parking. If you have 2 or more spaces, you will not be eligible. 
  • You must provide supporting documents to verify your residential address, such as:
  • Utility bill –no more than three months old.
  • Current lease.
  • Driver’s licence.
  • Rates notice - the postal address & the property address must match
  • Bank Statement – no more than three months old.

Who isn’t eligible for a Traffic Area Permit?

  • Businesses, hotels, hostels, B&B, and holiday units are not eligible. 
  • Property owners who do not reside at the property are not eligible.

Tourist & Visitor Accommodation Permit

$720 for 12-months

A 12-month Tourist and Visitor Accommodation Permit for approved tourist and visitor premises (as defined by applicable legislation) and subject to the following:

  • Premises has an ABN.
  • Tourist and Visitor Accommodation must have been approved prior to 30 May 2014.
  • excludes Short Term Rental.
  • Only applicable within 200m of the premises stated in the supporting letter discussed below. 
  • There is a limit of 10 permits per premises.
  • A site inspection, review of development approvals and assessment required by Council staff to confirm eligibility.

Supporting documents

Supporting letter from the tourist and accommodation premises stating:

  • the trading name.
  • the operating address.
  • the ABN.
  • confirmation it was approved prior to 30 May 2014.
  • name and role of the author (signatory) of the letter and their direct contact details.
  • number of off-street car spaces available for staff and guests.
  • number of permits applied for.

Native Title & School Permits

Native Title Permit

For Native Title Holders of the Bundjalung People of Byron Bay. 

For confirmation of membership and eligibility contact Bundjalung of Byron Bay Aboriginal Corporation.

School permit

School staff and teachers at the following schools may apply for a School Permit. This will make them exempt from time limits in specific streets surrounding their school. Please check the relevant parking zone map for details.

You must have an existing parking permit to apply for the school permit, such as the Shire Resident Permit or a Worker Permit.

  • Byron Bay Public School
  • Byron Community Primary School.
