The Biodiversity Act 2015 does not give any powers to local councils to interfere with native animals.

Pest Animals

Under the Biosecurity Act 2015, Council has a responsibility to manage pest animals on land we own or manage. 

Private landowners are also responsible for managing pests on their land.

Cats and dogs

We manage these domestic animals under the Companion Animals Act 1998.

Animal welfare

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 does not give any powers to local councils to respond to welfare concerns (including animals in vehicles)

Livestock and other animals - Public land

 


Some may fall under the provisions of the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021.

Please contact our Public & Environmental Services on 02 6626 7107 for support with animals capable of ownership that are unattended on public land.

Livestock on private land

 


We do not manage or have access to livestock ownership records.
