Visit the Byron Resource Recovery Centre (the tip) in Myocum to drop off household waste. 

We also have free trailers for hire when you're ready to get rid of some bulky waste. 

While you're there, drop into the Re-Market tip shop. We sell quality used, recycled and second-hand products that have been salvaged before going to landfill.

Drop off your problem household waste for free at our Community Recycling Centre at the Byron Resource Recovery Centre. 

You can drop off:

  • Gas bottles
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Paint
  • Fluoro globes and tubes
  • Car and household batteries
  • Motor and other oils
  • Smoke detectors
  • Electronic waste, such as TVs and computers.

Only household quantities accepted. Maximum container size 20kg or 20L. 

You can also take batteries, light globes and mobile phones to one of the Community Recycling Stations at:

  • Bangalow Bowls Club
  • Mullumbimby Council Office
  • Myocum Resource Recovery Centre
  • Woolworths, Byron Bay
  • Ocean Shores Shopping Centre

Leaving items on the nature strip is considered illegal dumping.  You can be fined up to $4000.

Each household gets TWO $50 waste disposal vouchers, for the 2024 to 2025 financial year. You can use the vouchers in one trip or in two separate trips to the Byron Resource Recovery Centre.

Vouchers can be used to dispose of:

  • Furniture and household items (worn).
  • Mattresses, bed bases and carpet.
  • Garden waste - for example branches, palm fronds, garden equipment.
  • Renovation waste (non-commercial) - for example bricks, concrete, timber, ceramics, plasterboard.
  • Mixed household waste.

Can your unwanted items be rehomed, resold, repaired or repurposed? Before you go over the weighbridge check in at 'The Re-Market tip shop' to see if they will accept your items (for free!).

Vouchers cannot be used to dispose of:

  • Fridges and tyres.
  • Industrial/commercial waste.
  • Liquids and asbestos.

How to use your vouchers

Owner/occupier

Your 2024/25 rates notice is your voucher! Take your property rates notice to the Byron Resource Recovery Centre weighbridge for scanning. 

Tenants

If you are renting you must get permission from the property owner or real estate agent.

Take one of the following to the Byron Resource Recovery Centre weighbridge for scanning:

Conditions of use

  • Only for households within the Byron Shire Council region
  • Each voucher can only be used once. No refunds or return visits will be permitted if the full $50 value is not used.
  • If you do not have your voucher (Rates notice or signed tenant form) you will be charged as per the fees and charges.
  • If the voucher amount is exceeded, payment will be required for the additional amount as per standard fees and charges.

Hire one of our courtesy trailers for FREE to:

  • bring household bulky waste or large loads of waste to the Byron Resource Recovery Centre.
  • take items home from the second-hand store at the Byron Resource Recovery Centre.
  • pick up mulch from the Byron Resource Recovery Centre. 

The trailer can only be used in the Byron Shire and is GPS tracked.

How to book a trailer

  1. Call the Byron Resource Recovery Hotline on 1300 652 625 to book.
  2. Pick the trailer up from the Byron Resource Recovery Centre on your booking date.

To hire you will need

  • Proof of residency.
  • Proof of current driver’s licence on pick-up.
  • A vehicle that is able to tow a trailer.
  • To sign a hire agreement including detailed terms and conditions.

Hire Times 

  • Pick up 8am, return by 2pm on weekdays only. 

Trailer sizes

  • Trailer 1: 8 x 5 (2.4m x 1.5m x 1.4m) box trailer with walls and cover. Best suited for larger vehicles and larger volumes of waste.
  • Trailer 2: 8 x 5 (2.4m x 1.5m x 1.2m) box trailer with walls and cover. Easier for smaller vehicles as it is has a lower cage and is lighter.

Our mobile aerated floor (MAF) composting facility turns more than 3,000 tonnes of garden waste a year into a soil conditioning mulch for your garden. 

Our mulch can be used for:

  • home gardens
  • urban landscaping
  • agriculture
  • land rehabilitation.

  • $38 per cubic metre.
  • $7.50 per bag - 60 litres/25 kg

We do not charge waste disposal fees to not-for-profit community groups that:

  • run stores that sell second hand and reusable items
  • clean up public land.
