Backflow Prevention

Backflow is a reversal of the normal direction of flow in a water supply plumbing system. This can result in potentially contaminated water entering the potable (drinking) water supply.

Backflow can occur when the water supply main (Council’s water reticulation system) becomes lower in pressure than a property’s plumbing system.

This can happen when:

  • Water pressure drops - like during a water main break.
  • Backpressure - when pressure at a property is higher than in the main system, such as when a pump is running.

The installation of backflow prevention devices protects the water supply from these very serious situations.

What’s a backflow prevention device?

A backflow prevention device is a plumbing fitting that prevents potentially contaminated water from flowing back into the water supply and then flowing to other customers.

These devices are important as they protect our water quality, and the health of people using it.
