Tennis Courts

Tennis is a terrific sport, and we are proud to have facilities spread across the Byron Shire.

Council-owned community tennis courts are at:

We maintain things such as:

  • Courts
  • Lighting
  • Nets
  • Upgrades.

Many of these courts are managed by community groups or court managers (Byron Bay, Billinudgel, South Golden Beach) who manage bookings for each facility.

Court bookings

Court bookings and enquiries about competitions and lessons can be made directly with each club or facility manager.

Changes to coaching and court management

Demand for courts is high. There are competing demands for social tennis and private, commercial coaching.

Council-owned community facilities, such as tennis courts, are for the benefit of all. They should not be monopolised by private, commercial operators.

Due to this high demand, in 2025 we began transitioning to the Tennis NSW model for coaching and venue management.

The reasons for this are:

  • To better manage community expectations in relation to equity and accessibility of courts for social play, competitions and coaching.
  • Providing clear and consistent guidelines across the Shire in relation to coaching arrangements and access to community courts.
  • Making sure coaches are properly accredited with Tennis Australia, meeting safety standards in relation to child safety protocols and police screening.
  • So community access to courts is maintained, especially at smaller venues such as Suffolk Park.
  • Giving equal opportunity to accredited coaches through non-exclusive access to courts and fair hiring rates.

Timeframe

The transition to the Tennis NSW model began in mid-2025 at Mullumbimby, followed by Suffolk Park.

Others tennis facilities will follow until they are all operating under the new framework. This is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Working with clubs, coaches and other stakeholders

We value the work and commitment of our volunteer tennis clubs and user groups. We will work closely with the clubs and all stakeholders through the transition process.
