We are delivering Stage 1 of the Byron Bay Swimming Pool upgrade to improve accessibility and provide a better experience for locals and visitors. 

Stages 2 and 3 will involve the detailed design and long‑term upgrade of the pool complex. These upgrades are actions of the Byron Shire Aquatic Strategy.

The community will be invited to provide further feedback on next stages in late 2026.

What is being upgraded? 

  • New all‑abilities toilets and showers
  • Dedicated pool entrance separating pool operations from the café

Grant funding is helping cover part of the cost of these essential works.

When are the works happening?

The work is due to start in June 2026.

The new accessible amenities and entranceway will be installed during the close season for the Byron Pool.

Funding

This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government through the Clubgrants Category 3 Infrastructure Grant $300,000.

Additional funding support provided by Council. 

Community consultation activities

Planning for this project included extensive engagement with current and potential users of the facility.

This was to ensure the design reflected community needs.

Community engagement activities

As part of the Shire-wide Aquatic Strategy we .....

22 local schools were interviewed to capture the perspectives of students, teachers, and families who regularly use aquatic facilities.

All major user groups, including water polo teams, swim coaches, facility management, aqua aerobics participants, swim clubs, and aged care representatives.

All submissions and feedback were provided to the consultants to integrate into the project plan.

Following this extensive engagement, Council resolved unanimously to proceed with the project.

What we heard through earlier consultation

We received more than 390 submissions during the consultation on the Future Pools Strategy.

Staff reviewed the feedback and presented a report to the Council on 27 February 2025.

Feedback

76 percent of respondents supported the redevelopment of the Byron Bay pool on its current site.

Suggestions for inclusions in the plan included:

  • Shaded areas
  • Facilities such as a spa, sauna or steam room and ice baths.

Council resolved to upgrade the Byron Bay Pool within current footprint,

Staff were directed to identify funding and progress detail design, staging options and initial costings of preferred options.
