Dogs in Public Spaces Strategy

We are responsible for managing public spaces including our beaches, parks and bushlands. With around 10,000 dogs living in the Byron Shire, we also have a role in managing dogs in those spaces.

Following community feedback, the Dogs in Public Spaces Strategy(PDF, 5MB) was adopted in late 2022.

About the Dogs in Public Spaces Strategy

The Dogs in Public Spaces Strategy encourages responsible pet ownership and compliance with legislation.

The strategy considers the needs of dog owners and everyone who uses and enjoys our public spaces.

The Strategy was developed in three stages:

  • Initial information gathering and research.
  • Further information gathered through community engagement.
  • Strategy development and implementation.

The project has explored:

  • Potential changes to the existing conditions for off-lead dog areas within the Shire.
  • The need for new dog prohibited areas, off-lead areas or enclosed dog parks within the Shire.
  • The suitability of existing dog exercise areas and associated infrastructure such as signage and bin.
  • How Council can encourage and promote responsible dog ownership.
