Pay your rates and water

If you are experiencing difficulty paying your rates and water accounts as a result of COVID-19, Council is offering a temporary payment plan to provide financial assistance to ratepayers.

Pay your rates and water using the methods below.

Pay online

Step 1.Pay online

Visit our eservices payment portal, to pay online. You will need your Rates reference number. You can also use the payment portal to check your balance. Please allow two business days for payment to be updated.  

We accept Mastercard or Visa, a credit card service fee of 0.42% applies.

Step 2.Using BPAY

Use BPAY to pay your rates and water from your cheque or savings account.

  • Quote biller code 747105 for rates plus the 7 digit reference number shown on your rate notice. 
  • Quote biller code 747113 for water along with the 7 digit reference number shown on your water notice.

Provided you have sufficient funds, the payment will be processed and you will be issued a receipt number from your banking institution for payment.

Direct Debit

Pay your rates or water accounts via Direct Debit. Payment can be made:

  • in full
  • paid quarterly
  • by an agreed arrangement with Council weekly, fortnightly, monthly.

The amount payable will be automatically deducted from your nominated account on the due date.

Pay over the phone

Call 1300 789 116 to pay your rates and water accounts over the phone

This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week for the cost of a local call, with the exception of mobile phones which will be charged at mobile phone rates.

Pay by mail

You can mail your cheque or money order payable to Byron Shire Council, together with the detachable deposit slip portion of the rate notice, to:

Pay in person

Step 1.Councils Customer Service Centre

Councils Customer Service Centre is currently closed due to COVID-19. Please use an alternative method.

Pay your rates in person at Councils Customer Service Centre on Station Street, Mullumbimby. We accept payments by cash, cheque or you may use your debit or credit card.

  • Please present your rate notice when making payment.
  • Office hours: Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 4 pm. 

Step 2.Australia Post 

Pay by cash, cheque or debit card at any Australia Post office. 

You cannot pay by credit card at Australia Post.

When are payments due?

To pay in full for the financial year, payment is due on or before 31 August.

To pay by instalments, the due dates for quarterly payments are the same each year:

  • 31 August
  • 30 November
  • 28 February
  • 31 May.

We will send you an instalment notice one month before the payment is due.


Late payments

If your quarterly payment is not paid in full by the due date interest will accrue on the outstanding amount.

Interest charges are at a rate of 7.5% per annum calculated daily.

To avoid paying interest charges, please ensure your payment reaches Council by the due date shown on your notice. If you are paying by mail, you should make allowances for postage time.
