NSW Government Roads and Infrastructure Election Commitment

In February 2020, the NSW Government announced $25 million for projects in the Byron Shire as part of its NSW Government Roads and Infrastructure Election Commitment.

One grant is for $20 million to help Council improve its road network.

The second grant of $5 million is to support projects in towns impacted by tourism.

Road projects 

The $20 million road fund will be split across a number of road improvement projects plus asphalt, reseal and patching programs.

There is also $10.15 million allocated for the following list of road reconstruction, resurfacing and improvements. The following table provides details about each of these projects and the status of the works.

Kingsley St (Byron Bay)

Asphalt resurfacing (middle section of the road).

Carlyle St (Byron Bay)

Asphalt resurfacing (middle section of the road).

There is additional scope to for road widening, kerb and gutter / drainage improvements, line marking and signage.

Resurfacing completed.

Lawson St (Byron Bay)

Asphalt resurfacing.

 

Resurfacing completed.

Bayshore Drive (Byron Bay) Asphalt resurfacing and road reconstruction. New shared path along length of road with multiple crossing points to be investigated. PAMP, Bike Plan and Byron Arts and Industry Estate Precinct Plan to be included. Design to begin mid-2021.
Fern St (Mullumbimby) Road reconstruction, drainage and kerb/gutter improvements, new line marking and signage. Design underway aligned with Mullumbimby Masterplan.
 Stuart St (Mullumbimby) Road reconstruction, drainage and kerb/gutter improvements, new line marking and signage. Design underway aligned with Mullumbimby Masterplan.
 Tincogan St (Mullumbimby)

Asphalt resurfacing.

Line marking, signage and intersection priority changes to be designed.

Resurfacing completed.

Will be designed alongside works on Stuart and Fern Streets and aligned with Mullumbimby Masterplan.

Main Arm Rd (east of Sherry's Bridge) 1km of road reconstruction and safety improvements including raising of the road to alleviate flooding issues. Design is currently underway.  Scheduled for construction in 21/22 financial year.
The Pocket Rd (near Sherringtons Lane) 1km of road reconstruction, road widening, drainage and safety improvements, new line-marking and signage.

Detailed design nearing completion. Works scheduled for 2021.

Support for tourism communities

The $5 million grant to support tourism communities will provide:

  • $2.05 million for the Sandhills Estate activation including a new skatepark and recreation precinct linking the Byron Bay Rec Grounds, Main Beach, Tennyson St, Massinger St and Byron St.
  • $1.57 million for completion of the Byron Bay to Suffolk Park cycle path
  • $945,000 for formalising South Beach Road (near Surf Club), Brunswick Heads.
  • $435,000 to improve public facilities at Byron Bay’s Main Beach.
