Mullumbimby water supply restored

Good news for Mullumbimby - the regular water supply is back online after council staff were able to resume production at the town’s water treatment plant.

High turbidity in the raw water supply at Laverty’s Gap Weir caused by cyclonic weather had forced the shutdown of Mullumbimby’s water treatment plant last Thursday.

It is with a great sigh of relief that we watch the Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred weather system finally start to ease here in the Byron Shire.

We have two evacuation centres still operating in the Byron Shire. Over coming days, the focus will change from disaster support to recovery.

Sandbags – what to do with them

People are advised to hold onto to their sandbags, if they are not damaged, for a couple more weeks in case there is another weather event, as the catchment is now very wet and the dunes are eroded.

Chloe Dowsett, Council’s Coastal and Biodiversity Coordinator said that people should not empty their sand or place sandbags onto the beach.

Mullumbimby residents asked to conserve water

Mullumbimby residents are being asked to conserve water as the town’s water treatment plant remains offline.

The Mullumbimby water treatment plant has not been able to produce clean drinking water since severe weather and heavy rain caused high levels of turbidity in the raw water supply at Lavertys Gap Weir.

Byron Shire Council community update – Sunday 9 March

The most immediate concern for Council is the availability of water for drinking and household use in Mullumbimby.

Mullumbimby residents are being asked to conserve water as the town’s water treatment plant remains offline.

From tomorrow Council will start reopening offices and facilities although it may take several days for things to be fully operational again.

Byron Shire Council emergency update – Saturday 8 March

Trees, water and sewer were the focus for Council today (Saturday) after ex-tropical Cyclone Alfred crossed the coast.

The full extent of damage to our road network will not be known until next week until water in some parts of the Shire subsides.

Norfolk pines at Byron Bay removed for public safety

Late yesterday afternoon (Friday 7 March), Council authorised the removal of three Norfolk Pines in Byron Bay.

One tree was in Jonson Street and two were in Apex Park near the Byron Bay Surf Club.

Byron Shire Council emergency update –Friday 7 March
