Proposed changes to the former site of the Mullumbimby Hospital

Feedback closes Sunday 11 February 2024

View across green grassed field to tree line, and clear blue sky. A building roof top is just visible through the trees.

The former Mullumbimby Hospital site is rare flood-free land in Mullum.

We are looking at ways to use the site with a mix of housing and other community facilities and services.

To do so, we are proposing changes to the Byron Local Environmental Plan 2014 (LEP) as follows.

  • Increase the height from 9m to 11.5m for part of the site.
  • Change the zone of part of the site from SP2 Infrastructure (Health Services Facility) to R1 General Residential and a small area to C2 Environmental Conservation.
  • Additional permitted uses for the site to support complimentary and site-specific uses.
  • Add an Affordable Housing Contributions Scheme for the development area.
  • List the site in the Design Excellence provisions.
  • Other minor amendments for consistency of the above throughout the LEP.

This proposal is based on community feedback on the Site Strategy and Urban Design Protocol(PDF, 5MB) .

The Minister of Planning or delegate is the plan making authority for finalisation of this Planning Proposal.

You can see the Mullumbimby Hospital redevelopment page on our website to learn more about the project timeline and other key elements to deliver housing on the site.
