Parking Permit Types & Supporting Documents

Resident and Pensioner Pay Parking Permits

  • Resident permit - $55 for 12-months
  • Pensioner permit - FREE

A resident parking permit allows you to park in Byron Bay's pay-parking areas without the need for a parking meter ticket.

Documents

Byron Shire rate payer – provide your rates notice showing the same name as your parking permit application.

Byron Shire Resident - provide a current version of one of the following with a Byron Shire address:

  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Driver’s license 
  • Pensioner card
  • Utility bill (e.g. phone, internet, electricity, gas, etc.)
  • Rental agreement or letter from landlord/owner with proof of rental longer than 6 months.

Proof of vehicle ownership or lawful use - New permits only

All new parking permit applications must provide evidence that links you to the vehicle. This is not required for a permit renewal.

Accepted documents include:

  • Vehicle registration certificate. 
  • A screenshot from the Service NSW website. Screenshots from the Service NSW mobile app are not accepted as they do not show owner details. 
  • Current NSW CTP renewal notice/certificate or 
  • Current NSW vehicle insurance policy. 

If you don’t own the vehicle, you must prove you are legally allowed to drive it by providing: 

  • Documents identifying you as the owner of the company vehicle. For example ASIC Register, or
  • A signed letter from the company, friend or relative the vehicle is registered to, including:  
  • Vehicle registration number
  • Your name
  • Confirmation that you are a company employee, friend or relative and you have full use of the vehicle
  • Contact details for the company owner, friend or relative
  • For company correspondence the letter should be on letter head or from the company email address.

Pensioner Parking Permit

Supporting documents:

  • Current Centrelink Pension Card (Blue Card) 
  • Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) Gold Card 
  • Current vehicle registration that notes your pensioner status.

Business, Worker or Volunteer Permit

$110 for 12-months

You can apply for this permit if you are a business, worker or volunteer based within the Byron Bay pay parking area.

Business Permit 

Businesses must provide: 

  • Current vehicle registration certificate
  • Proof of Business Location: For example, a current lease agreement or utilities bill (within last 3 months) that shows your business is in the Byron Bay pay parking area. 

Worker Permit

Workers employed by a business with a fixed address within the Byron Bay pay parking area need to provide:

  • Current vehicle registration certificate in the name of the applicant. 
  • Proof of employment, such as payslip or company letterhead, showing your name and role within the business, and name /role of the owner or manager and contact details.

Volunteer Permit

Volunteers working for an organisation with a fixed address within the Byron Bay pay parking area. must provide:

  • Current vehicle registration certificate in the name of the applicant. 
  • Proof of volunteer work, such as a supporting letter on official letterhead, showing your name and role within the organisation, and name /role of the owner or manager plus their direct contact details.

Temporary Business Parking Permit

$110 for 3 months

A 3-month Temporary Business Permit is for a business, activity, or service within the pay parking area. The following applies to this type of permit.

  • The permit applies within 200m of the business, activity or service stated in the supporting letter discussed below.
  • There is a limit of 5 permits/vehicles per business, activity, or service.
  • An eligibility assessment will be undertaken by Council staff.

An example may be a business located within the pay parking area undertaking a fit out and temporary permits are required for the tradies.

Supporting documents

The following documents must be submitted with the application.

  • Current vehicle registration certificate for each vehicle.

We do not accept: Expired certificates, screenshots from the app, registration receipts, registration checks and CTP documents.

  • Current driving license for each vehicle owner.
  • Supporting letter(s) from the relevant business, activity, or service located within the pay parking area stating:
  • the trading name of the business, activity, or service located within the pay parking area where the activity / works are to be undertaken.
  • its operating address.
  • name and role of the author (signatory) of the letter and their direct contact details.
  • Briefly, the works proposed to be undertaken by the business, activity, or service.
  • Who will undertake the works / activity / service and requires the permit(s).
  • Number of permits applied for.

Traffic Area Permits

Free

Residents who live in the following parking areas are eligible for a Traffic Area Permit. A maximum of two vehicles per household can be exempt at any one time.

  • Bayshore Drive
  • Belongil
  • Brunswick Heads (east)
  • Brunswick Heads CBD and surrounds
  • Butler Street precinct
  • Schools’ precinct
  • Tennyson/Massinger precinct
  • Wategos precinct.

Traffic Area Permits allow you to park in the street where you live with no time restriction. They cannot be used in the pay parking area.

For visitors 

You must update your permit with the licence plate for your visitor’s vehicle using the permit portal.

  1. Select the 'update vehicle' button.
  2. Enter the details.  

The Traffic Area Permits are subject to the following:

  • You must be a long-term resident, not a guest at hotel, hostel, holiday unit.
  • You must have limited or no off-street parking. If you have 2 or more spaces, you will not be eligible. 
  • Submit supporting documentation to verify your residential address, such as:
  • Utility bill –no more than three months old.
  • Telephone account – no more than three months old.
  • Current lease
  • Driver’s license
  • Pension card
  • Electoral roll card
  • Rates notice
  • Bank Statement – no more than three months old
  • Centrelink health card
  • Rental bond receipt
  • Official government correspondence – no more than 3 months old.

Who isn’t eligible for a Traffic Area Permit?

  • Businesses, hotels, hostels, B&B, and holiday units are not eligible. 
  • Property owners who do not reside at the property are not eligible.

Mobility Permit

If you have a mobility parking permit it is free to park in our pay parking areas.

Tourist and Visitor Accommodation Permit

$660 for 12-months

A 12-month Tourist and Visitor Accommodation Permit for approved tourist and visitor premises (as defined by applicable legislation) and subject to the following:

  • Premises has an ABN.
  • Tourist and Visitor Accommodation must have been approved prior to 30 May 2014.
  • excludes Short Term Rental.
  • Only applicable within 200m of the premises stated in the supporting letter discussed below. 
  • There is a limit of 10 permits per premises.
  • A site inspection, review of development approvals and assessment required by Council staff to confirm eligibility.

Supporting documents

The following supporting documentation is required to be submitted with the permit application:

Supporting letter from the tourist and accommodation premises stating:

  • the trading name.
  • its operating address.
  • its ABN.
  • Confirmation it was approved prior to 30 May 2014.
  • name and role of the author (signatory) of the letter and their direct contact details.
  • Number of off-street car spaces available for staff and guests.
  • Number of permits applied for.

Other types of permit

Native Title Permit

For Native Title Holders of the Bundjalung People of Byron Bay.

School permit

School staff and teachers at the following schools may apply for a School Permit. this will make them exempt from time limits in specific streets surrounding their school, conditions apply.

  • Brunswick Heads Public School
  • Byron Bay Public School
  • Byron Community Primary School.
