Parking Permit Types & Supporting Documents

Find out what documents you need to provide for each parking permit type below.

  • Eligible residents can apply for two free Shire resident parking permits per rateable property.
  • Additional permits are $55.

Shire Resident Parking Permit

Documents

You will need to provide BOTH:

  1. Current car registration.
  2. Proof of residency within the Byron Shire.  

Proof of residency documents

  • Current vehicle registration certificate with a Byron Shire address. It is a legal requirement for people to update their name and address on their vehicle registration and CTP insurance within 14 days of changing address.
  • Current Driver’s licence with a Byron Shire address.

Proof of vehicle ownership documents

New applications must provide - vehicle registration certificate naming the applicant as the registered owner.

If the vehicle is owned by a company you must provide - documents proving lawful use of the vehicle such as: 

  • Copy of a long-term rental contract/licence agreement for the use of the vehicle which identifies the applicant as the lessee/licensee and person lawfully entitled to use of the vehicle; or 
  • Documents identifying the applicant as a company Director/Secretary (e.g. ASIC company extract); or
  • A signed letter from a senior official of the company the vehicle is registered to, indicating that the applicant is entitled to use the vehicle. The letter must be on company letterhead or sent from the company email address and include details of:  
  • Vehicle registration number
  • Applicant name
  • Confirmation that the applicant is a company employee or entitled to use of the vehicle
  • Contact details for the company owner/Directors
  • Position of the individual signing the letter.

Applications may take up to 10 business days to process. 

Existing resident permits

Can be used to park in Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay pay parking zones until expiry. Then you can apply for the NEW Shire Resident Permit (if eligible).

Vehicle not registered in the Byron Shire

  • Parking permits are not available to residents of neighbouring shires.
  • If a resident or ratepayer's vehicle is not registered to an address in the Byron Shire that vehicle is not eligible for a parking permit.

Pensioner Parking Permit

A Pensioner Shire Resident Parking Permit allows you to park in Byron Shire's pay-parking areas without the need for a parking meter ticket.

Pensioner Permits are FREE.

Documents

  1. Proof of residency in the Byron Shire such as vehicle registration certificate.
  2. Proof of vehicle ownership
  3. Proof of pension status

Proof of residency documents

You must provide a current version of one of the following with a Byron Shire address:

  • Vehicle registration certificate.
  • Driver’s licence. 

Proof of vehicle ownership documents

Please provide vehicle registration certificate naming the applicant as the registered owner.

If the vehicle is owned by a company, the applicant will be required to provide documents proving lawful use of the vehicle such as:

Proof of pension status documents

  • Current Centrelink Pension Card (Blue Card).
  • Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) Gold Card.
  • Current vehicle registration that notes your pensioner status.

Applications may take up to 10 business days to process.

Business, Worker or Volunteer Permit

$116 for 12-months

You can apply for this permit if you are a business, worker or volunteer based within a pay parking area.

Business Permit 

Business owners based within the pay parking area must provide: 

  • Current vehicle registration certificate - We DO NOT accept, expired certificates, screenshots from the NSW Service app. registration receipts, rego checks or CTP Certificates. 
  • Proof of Business Location - for example, a current lease agreement or utilities bill (within last 3 months) that shows your business is in the pay parking area. 

Employees of a business need to apply for a Worker Permit.

Worker Permit

Workers employed by a business with a fixed address within a pay parking area need to provide:

  • Current vehicle registration certificate in the name of the applicant. 
  • Proof of employment, such as payslip.

Volunteer Permit

Volunteers working for an organisation with a fixed address within a pay parking area must provide:

  • Current vehicle registration certificate in the name of the applicant. 
  • Proof of volunteer work, such as a supporting letter on official letterhead, showing your name and role within the organisation, and name /role of the owner or manager plus their direct contact details.

Temporary Business Parking Permit

$116 for 3 months

A 3-month Temporary Business Permit is for a business, activity, or service within a pay parking area. 

  • The permit applies within 200m of the business, activity or service stated in the supporting letter discussed below.
  • There is a limit of 5 permits/vehicles per business, activity, or service.
  • An eligibility assessment will be undertaken by Council staff.

An example may be a business located within the pay parking area undertaking a fit out and temporary permits are required for the tradies.

Supporting documents

  • Current vehicle registration certificate for each vehicle. We DO NOT accept: Expired certificates, screenshots from the app, registration receipts, registration checks and CTP documents.
  • Current driving licence for each vehicle owner.
  • Supporting letter(s) from the relevant business, activity, or service located within the pay parking area stating the:
    • trading name of the business, activity, or service located within the pay parking area where the activity / works are to be undertaken.
    • operating address.
    • name and role of the author (signatory) of the letter and their direct contact details.
    • works proposed to be undertaken by the business, activity, or service.
    • person who will undertake the works / activity / service and requires the permit(s).
    • number of permits applied for.

Traffic Area Permit

Free

Traffic Area Permits allow you to park in a timed space or a pay parking space, within close proximity of your place of residence, for free, and for as long as you need.

Residents who live in the following parking areas are eligible for a Traffic Area Permit. A maximum of two vehicles per household can be exempt at any one time.

  • Bayshore Drive
  • Belongil
  • BH1 - includes Brunswick Heads CBD and surrounds (Tweed Street, Park Street).
  • BH2 - includes Brunswick Heads East (South Beach Road and South Beach Lane).
  • Butler Street precinct
  • Schools’ precinct
  • Tennyson/Massinger precinct
  • Wategos precinct.

Traffic Area Permits cannot be used in the pay parking area unless the residential address is located within the pay parking area

For visitors 

You must update your permit with the licence plate for your visitor’s vehicle using the permit portal. Once updated the vehicle will be covered immediately.

  1. Select the 'update vehicle' button.
  2. Enter the details.  

Terms and conditions - Traffic Area Permits

  • You must be a long-term resident, not a guest at hotel, hostel, or holiday unit.
  • You must have limited or no off-street parking. If you have 2 or more spaces, you will not be eligible. 
  • You must provide supporting documents to verify your residential address, such as:
  • Utility bill –no more than three months old.
  • Current lease.
  • Driver’s licence.
  • Rates notice.
  • Bank Statement – no more than three months old.

Who isn’t eligible for a Traffic Area Permit?

  • Businesses, hotels, hostels, B&B, and holiday units are not eligible. 
  • Property owners who do not reside at the property are not eligible.

Tourist and Visitor Accommodation Permit

$696 for 12-months

A 12-month Tourist and Visitor Accommodation Permit for approved tourist and visitor premises (as defined by applicable legislation) and subject to the following:

  • Premises has an ABN.
  • Tourist and Visitor Accommodation must have been approved prior to 30 May 2014.
  • excludes Short Term Rental.
  • Only applicable within 200m of the premises stated in the supporting letter discussed below. 
  • There is a limit of 10 permits per premises.
  • A site inspection, review of development approvals and assessment required by Council staff to confirm eligibility.

Supporting documents

Supporting letter from the tourist and accommodation premises stating:

  • the trading name.
  • the operating address.
  • the ABN.
  • confirmation it was approved prior to 30 May 2014.
  • name and role of the author (signatory) of the letter and their direct contact details.
  • number of off-street car spaces available for staff and guests.
  • number of permits applied for.

Native Title and School Permits

Native Title Permit

For Native Title Holders of the Bundjalung People of Byron Bay.

School permit

School staff and teachers at the following schools may apply for a School Permit. This will make them exempt from time limits in specific streets surrounding their school. Please check the relevant parking zone map for details.

You must have an existing parking permit to apply for the school permit, such as the Shire Resident Permit or a Worker Permit.

If you have a mobility parking permit it is free to park in our pay parking areas.
