Restoring New Brighton Dunes

  • Project typeBeach scraping and revegetation
  • Project value$200,000
  • Project scheduleWinter 2026

In March 2025, the dunes of New Brighton Beach were significantly impacted by Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Starting in winter 2026, we will be completing dune restoration works.

Works will take two to four weeks, with ongoing vegetation maintenance.

What works are happening?

Works will be done in the area between Park Street and North Head Road car park, New Brighton.

  • Beach scraping using heavy machinery to move sand from the tidal zone up to where the dunes have eroded.
  • Fencing and revegetation – once the sand is in place.

When are works happening?

  • Starting in winter for two to four weeks.
  • Work hours: Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm, with some Saturday works. No works during school holidays.

How will this impact me?

During this time there will be:

  • changes to beach access paths
  • heavy machinery on the beach with some areas closed.

Work will be done in stages so that some beach access remains.

Permanent closure of two beach access ways

As part of this project, we will be permanently closing two beach access ways south of Strand Avenue.

Reducing the number of access ways helps dune stability and resilience.

See the map for details.
