Mullumbimby Road upgrade

The upgrade of sections of Mullumbimby Road is a major project that is being done in several stages.

Works include road reconstruction, safety improvements and drainage work.

Latest news

Mullumbimby Road is now OPEN to two-way traffic. Detours are no longer in place and heavy vehicles can resume use of Mullumbimby Road.

As we continue with finishing works, traffic control will be in place. The road will be reduced to one lane at times for the safety of road users and workers. You may experience short traffic delays.

Please drive carefully through the works site.

Works update

Stage three heavy patching works are planned to start in mid to late February 2026, subject to weather.

Work will occur between the Kings Creek Bridge and James Street including near the Manns Road intersection.

We will construct a temporary extra traffic lane on Mullumbimby Road, so that traffic can continue to flow two ways, but please expect short traffic delays.

Some work will be done at night.

Stage 2 October to December 2025

Works included:

  • Minor road widening
  • New road pavement
  • Signage and line marking
  • Drainage work to reduce nuisance flooding including drain clearing and new culvert crossings.
  • Heavy patching - The Saddle Road to James Street (October).

During this stage Mullumbimby Road was CLOSED to all outbound traffic (except school buses, emergency services and waste services) including on weekends.

This was necessary because sections of the road corridor are narrow or there is a steep drop-off meaning we cannot build a temporary lane to accommodate two-way traffic.

Stage 1 July to October 2025

Stage 1 focused on the section of Mullumbimby Road between The Saddle Road and McAuleys Lane,

It started in July and the majority of work was finished in mid-October.

Work included:

  • Shoulder widening on Mullumbimby Road at McAuleys Lane intersection.
  • Adding right-hand turn lane onto McAuleys Lane from Mullumbimby Road.
  • New road surface, signage, guardrails, line marking.
  • Tree and vegetation removal near Gulgan Road.

Project funding

The combined value of this project is $5.3 million.

It is funded by the Australian and NSW Governments and Council:

  • Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Program Betterment Fund.
  • Essential Public Asset Reconstruction Work funding
  • Australian Government Blackspot Program
  • Transport for NSW Roads to Recovery Program

Future roundabout at the intersection of Gulgan Road and Mullumbimby Road

Council is seeking grant opportunities for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Gulgan Road and Mullumbimby Road.

Mullumbimby to Brunswick Cycleway

This project does not include work on the Mullumbimby to Brunswick Heads cycleway because it is not part of the grant funding.

Design of the cycleway is underway and expected to be finalised in the second half of 2025.  Council will then start looking for grant funding for this important project.
