Byron Shire Council extends its deep condolences on the passing of proud Widjabul Wia-bal woman from the Bundjalung Nation, Aunty Rhoda Roberts AO.

“On behalf of the entire Byron Shire community, I want to express our deep sympathy to Aunty Rhoda’s family, friends and community who are mourning the loss of this extraordinary woman,” Byron Shire Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye said.

“Aunty Rhoda’s spirit was vibrant, generous, and expansive and her presence touched, uplifted, and transformed the lives of so many.

“Her legacy is profound. As a pioneering and trailblazing voice for First Nations people, Aunty Rhoda reshaped Australia’s arts and creative landscape. She stood as one of this country’s most influential cultural leaders, an authoritative and compassionate figure across the arts and media, and a fierce and unwavering champion of First Nations voices.

“Here in the Byron Shire, we were privileged to benefit from her immense knowledge, her cultural leadership, and her willingness to share her wisdom with openness, passion, and grace.

“She was always bringing together indigenous people and showcasing their incredible culture to the world through events like the Boomerang Festival and Bluesfest.

“I have no doubt her ancestors would be so proud at all she was able to do on Bundjalung Country and across the world.

“She will be so deeply missed. Her light, her courage, and her enduring commitment to truth-telling and cultural strength will continue to guide us all,” the Mayor said.

“In recognition of her extraordinary impact, I am writing to State and Federal leaders advocating for a State Funeral, as a fitting tribute to her national legacy - if this aligns with the family's wishes,” Mayor Ndiaye said.
