If you’re 14 to 24 years old, or you know someone who is, Council is hosting a free two-day Youth Empowerment workshop on the last weekend of June at the Federal Hall.

To participate, book your free ticket via the What’s On page on Council’s website:

Designed to acknowledge the impacts of the recent floods on Byron Shire’s young people, the two-day Youth Empowerment program is being delivered by local youth leaders from the Joyality Collective to help inspire and support wellbeing, strengthen interpersonal skills and build the tools for greater resilience and leadership.

Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon urged anyone aged 14 to 24 to take up this unique opportunity for some free wellbeing support and training.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to build their interpersonal skills and mental resilience, to help yourself and others through the hard times – whether it’s floods and natural disasters, or just everyday life,” the Mayor said.

“This two-day program is worth hundreds of dollars per participant and we’re able to offer the training weekend for free thanks to NSW and Australian Government Disaster Funding Arrangements,” he said.

During the Youth Empowerment Workshop participants will:

  • Have your voice heard and valued.
  • Meet other people who’ve been through similar experiences.
  • Explore your personal passions and purpose.
  • Recover well and step into your leadership style.

The workshops will be facilitated by the Joyality Collective’s Shamila Millard, alongside youth leaders Audrey O’Donnell Par, Saorise Chu and Byron Shire Council’s Recovery Officer Zali Spinner.

Guest speakers include Sophie Wilksch, winner of the Resilient Australia Mental Health and Wellbeing Award (Post-Flood Repair and Recovery Initiative).

“Joyality uses applied ecopsychology to strengthen connection to self, community, and nature,” Joyality Project Facilitator, Shamila Millard said.

Delicious local catering will be provided.

The Youth Empowerment 2-day workshop is being held at Federal Hall on Saturday June 29 and Sunday 30, 10am until 4pm both days
