Upgrades to South Beach Road Brunswick Heads

Work to upgrade the road and install drainage on South Beach Road, Brunswick Heads, started in early February 2025 and is due for completion mid-to-late August. Minor works will need to be completed in warmer weather including the final seal of South Beach Lane.

This major upgrade has delivered an impressive list of improvements:

  • Reconstruction and resurfacing of South Beach Road and Torakina Carpark. The final reseal of South Beach Lane will be completed in warmer weather.
  • New drainage infrastructure and addition of Water Sensitive Urban Design features (water gardens to filter road sheet water and pollutants and protect the nearby waterways). 
  • New kerb and gutter works.
  • New parking design for Torakina Carpark to vastly improve safety and flow.
  • Line marking.
  • Landscaping and signage.

Funding

This $2.7m project has been made possible thanks to more than $1m from the NSW Government, $500k from the Roads to Recovery program (Australian Government) and the remaining $1.2m from Byron Shire Council.

Future works

With the scope of works for this upgrade successfully delivered on time and budget, future works could include a range of staged improvements for the Brunswick Heads foreshore area such as (but not limited to):

  • Footpaths
  • Bollards
  • Additional parking
  • Pedestrian crossings
  • Street and public space lighting
  • Toilet upgrades.

Further upgrades in the area will need to be developed in consultation with Crown Lands, Native Title owners and the community.

Grant funding or other sources of funding will need to be secured for any future works.
