Preliminary works for new Bayshore Drive roundabout
Published on 22 November 2024
Council is building a slip lane on Lot 12 Bayshore Drive and undertaking other preliminary work ahead of construction of a new roundabout, set to start at the end of January 2025.
“We’re building the slip lane to keep two lanes of traffic flowing while we build the roundabout, and it means that access to Byron Bay Fair shopping complex will be unaffected and fully open during the busy Christmas period,” Council’s Manager Assets and Major Projects, Chris Soulsby said.
Water, sewer and NBN services will also be installed as part of the preliminary works which will be finished by mid-to-late January. To minimise impacts on local traffic and businesses, the water and sewer works which will cross Bayshore Drive, will take place over two nights.
“The important message for the local community and businesses is that traffic flow along Bayshore Drive will be as normal while we do these preliminary works over the Summer months,” Mr Soulsby said.
“Construction of the roundabout will get into full swing in mid-to-late January and is expected to be completed by September.”
“As we near completion of the project we will need to reduce traffic flow to one lane and we will have traffic management in place to support this,” he said.
The roundabout is being constructed at the intersection of the access road to the Byron TAFE and the IGA Shopping complex at Sunrise, in the Byron Arts and Industry Estate.
This project is part of the development of a 5.8 hectare Council-owned block of land known as Lot 12 Bayshore Drive.
