Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open for people wanting to operate surf schools and kayak tours in the Byron Shire.

The closing date for EOIs is 1 July 2025.

In a change from previous years, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is now managing the EOI process rather the Byron Shire Council.

Council will however be on the assessment panel reviewing the licence applications.

NPWS and Council are offering six licences for surf schools of varying sizes, and two licences for kayak tours.

The number of licences is strictly controlled so the beaches and ocean remain shared spaces for everyone.

Malcolm Robertson, Council’s Manager Open Spaces and Facilities, said the licence system also ensures that all operators have appropriate first-aid skills and safety procedures in place.

Information about how to submit an EOI for surf schools and kayak tours is on Council’s website.
