1000 Voices Byron Shire

1000 Voices Byron Shire is a community-led project focused on listening to ideas, experiences and perspectives that will help solve homelessness.

1000 Voices is part of the Ending Rough Sleeping Collaboration Byron Shire.

Our survey is now closed. Find out more about the next steps and register for the workshop sessions.

We heard you!

Over 700 community members responded to the 1000 Voices Survey, during July to September.

Every voice has added to a bigger picture of who we are, what matters most and how we can work together to end homelessness in Byron Shire.

1000 Voices is a powerful dataset that hasn’t existed before. We now have a local, community-led picture of homelessness in our shire that goes beyond existing reports and numbers.

The 1000 Voices Survey is now closed. We are deeply grateful to the hundreds of community members who took part.

Why the 1000 Voices is important

Byron Shire has the second highest number of people sleeping rough in NSW. Most solutions to this issue are designed without consulting the local community.

1000 Voices is changing that.

Watch this video, to learn more about the approach and why your voice matters.

Our "What We Heard" report will highlight key themes and insights. These will guide our immediate actions and long-term goals.

It will inform important strategies, policies and plans such as:

  • The Byron Shire Homelessness Issues and Options Paper
  • The Ending Rough Sleeping Collaboration Byron Shire Shared Agenda / Cross-Sector Action Plan
  • Byron Shire Council’s (internal) Homelessness Action Plan
  • Broad systems and policy shifts through important advocacy and service design
  • Local and regional systems' change efforts.

This is more than a survey. It’s a step toward a new way of working and we need everyone – join us!

Community at the heart of 1000 Voices

1000 Voices was made possible by the energy, care, and commitment of our community.

At the centre of this work were our Community Researchers. A dedicated group of locals.

These people stepped forward to listen, encourage participation, and make sure voices that needed support were included.

Local organisations, services and schools helped to promote the survey through their networks. Posters, events, stalls and social media helped spread the word.

Thank you to every Community Researcher, community member, and partner organisation who gave their time, energy, and heart to 1000 Voices.
