Local Heritage Grant Program 2025 to 2026

The Local Heritage Grant program supports property owners by providing funds to assist in conserving and enhancing their heritage places.

If you have recently carried out work to conserve or enhance a listed heritage building, or a building within a heritage conservation area, you may be eligible. 

Grants of up to $3,000 are available, offered on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Aims of the grant

  • Encourage works that conserve and enhance the heritage aspects of places.
  • Support upgrades to older buildings in heritage areas so they continue to add value to the area's history.
  • Help residents by covering the cost of conservation works.
  • Increase interest and awareness of heritage conservation within the Byron Shire.
  • Promote a positive attitude in the community towards protecting and celebrating heritage in the Byron Shire.

This Grant Program will be run until June 2026 or until the funds have been allocated.

Step 2.Prepare the following documents

You will need to provide:

  • Approval by Heritage Exemption or Development Application
  • Plans or sketches (where applicable)
  • Tax invoices for works
  • Photographs taken before, during and after the works.
  • Statutory declaration the works have been completed and paid for in accordance with eligibility criteria.
  • Authorisation from all property owners.

If you have recently carried out work to conserve or enhance a listed heritage building, or a building within a heritage conservation area, you may be eligible for a Local Heritage Grant of up to $3,000, offered on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

The aims of the grant are to:

  • Encourage works to heritage items that conserve and enhance their heritage-significant aspects.
  • Support works to contributory buildings in heritage conservation areas to strengthen their contribution to the area’s overall heritage values.
  • Assist residents by helping cover the cost of conservation works.
  • Foster greater interest in and awareness of heritage conservation within the Byron Shire.
  • Promote a positive community attitude towards protecting and celebrating heritage in the Byron Shire.
