New Brighton Road water main relocation

We are relocating and reconnecting a water main in South Golden Beach that was damaged by flooding.

The work will strengthen the local water supply by placing a section of the water main underground. This was previously attached to North Ocean Shores Bridge on New Brighton Road.

New Brighton Road closed

New Brighton Road will be closed for almost four weeks from Thursday 2 October.

Traffic will be detoured via Kallaroo Circuit at the northern end of South Golden Beach.

Detour during road closure

The map below shows the location of the closed section of New Brighton Road and the detour route for traffic.

What work is being done?

A 180m section of water pipe will be underbored on the southern side of New Brighton Road between Kolora Way and Redgate Road.

The pipe will pass beneath Yelgun Creek at a depth of almost 10m. Trenches will be dug across New Brighton Road at each end of the underground section to connect it to the existing pipeline on the northern side of the road.

Pipes will be stored on the corner of Redgate Road and New Brighton Road.

This project will use underground horizonal drilling, also called underboring. This will:

  • create a more secure water main that is not exposed to flood risks
  • avoid disturbing the environmentally sensitive Yelgun Creek area.

Why is this work needed?

The original water main was attached to North Ocean Shores Bridge, which crosses over Yelgun Creek.

Flooding in 2022 broke the main away from the bridge and damaged the pipeline. This lead to us having to disconnect the affected section.

Reconnection of this water main will reduce the risk of water supply interruptions in South Golden Beach, New Brighton and Ocean Shores.

The need to improve the resilience of the water main by locating it underground was identified after the damage caused by the 2022 floods.

Funding

This project is funded from the $145 million Northern Rivers Water and Wastewater Repair and Recovery Program.
