Child Safe Policy

We are committed to being a child safe organisation.

We respect all children and their wellbeing.

We will embed Child Safe Standards into our leadership, governance and culture.

We will support our staff and volunteers in their responsibilities.

We will strive to keep children safe from harm and abuse.

Our policy outlines our commitment to creating and maintaining a child-safe organisation and delivers on the NSW Government’s requirement to implement 10 Child Safe Standards

Our policy is supported by five key pillars

  1. Our people
  2. Our behaviours
  3. Our empowerment approach
  4. Our spaces and our reporting approach.

In practice this might look like:

  • Being clear about appropriate behaviours for all staff
  • Asking children what they think about a playground design before we build it
  • Doing relevant checks on new staff members before they start with Council
  • Speaking up and reporting if we see something that’s not right
  • Signing up to a “commitment to child safe conduct” for educators working directly with children
  • Publishing our child safe commitment on our website
  • Training all staff in child safe conduct.

If you see something that doesn’t feel right, speak up

If a child is in immediate danger, call 000

You can also call the child protection hotline on 132 111.

If you have concerns about a Council employee’s behaviour email childsafe@byron.nsw.gov.au or call 02 6626 7000
