Economic Strategy
The Byron Shire Economic Strategy sets out Council's role in supporting the local economy from 2025 to 2035 and is implemented by multiple sub Action Plans.
Action Plans will be finalised in mid 2026 and an Economic Activation Group will be established in early 2026.
Developing the Strategy and Action Plans
The Byron Shire Economic Strategy was developed through a staged process that responded to changing conditions, community feedback and Council priorities.
Initial Strategies
Two draft strategies were initially prepared through extensive consultation: a Business, Industry and Visitor Economy (BIVE) Strategy and a draft Events Strategy. These were intended to replace older strategies and respond to economic disruption and changing conditions. Both draft strategies were publicly exhibited in 2024.
Community Feedback and Strategic Pivot
In response to feedback, Council endorsed a shift to a single, integrated Economic Strategy, supported by multiple Action Plans. This approach combined strengths of previous drafts into one cohesive framework, introduced clearer structure and updated data, and improved alignment with Council’s broader planning and economic development work.
Final Strategy
The final Economic Strategy was adopted by Council in November 2025 and now provides the overarching framework for Council’s role in supporting the local economy.
Next Steps
The Expressions of Interest for an Economic Activation Group (EAG) closed on 31 January 2026. Once established, the EAG will support collaboration and local input.
Action Plans will be refined and reported to Council in mid‑2026. The group will continue to meet quarterly to support ongoing delivery. See Your Say for more information.
