Byron Bay or Wategos residents who live adjacent to pay parking areas may be eligible for 2 free Traffic Area Permits. One for the resident and another for visitors.
Traffic Area Permits allow you to park in the street where you live with no time restriction. They cannot be used in the pay parking area.
The Traffic Area Permits are subject to the following:
- You must live in one of the four precincts: Butler Street, Schools, Tennyson / Massinger, or Wategos.
- Butler Street Traffic Area Permit can only be used within the Butler Street Precinct. This applies to all Traffic Area Permits.
- be a long-term resident (not a guest at hotel, hostel, holiday unit)
- have limited or no off-street parking (if you have 2 or more spaces you will not be eligible)
- Submit supporting documentation to verify your residential address, such as:

- Utility bill –no more than 3 months old
- Telephone account – no more than 3 months old
- Current lease
- Driver’s license
- Pension card
- Electoral roll card
- Rates notice
- Bank Statement – no more than 3 months old
- Centrelink health card
- Rental bond receipt
- Official government correspondence – no more than 3 months old.

Visitor permits
A Traffic Area Permit can also be used for your visitor’s vehicles. You must update the licence plate for your visitor’s vehicle using the permit portal. Select the 'update vehicle' button and enter the details.
A maximum of two vehicles per household can be exempt at any one time.
Who isn’t eligible for a Traffic Area Permit?
- Businesses, hotels, hostels, B&B and holiday units are not eligible.
- Property owners who do not reside at the property are not eligible.

Please allow up to 10 business days for your Traffic Area permit to be assessed. If approved, the status of the permit will change from “Pending” to “Granted”. If the permit is not approved, an email will be sent explaining the reason.
