Apply for a parking permit

Buy an annual parking permit to park in Byron Bay's pay-parking areas and council car parks. 

Use the online parking permit portal to:

  • Renew your parking permit.
  • Apply for a new parking permit.
  • Change your vehicle details. 

To change your address, email, or credit card details, log in to your PayStay account.

Before you start

Step 1.Check you have the correct documents for your permit type

Step 2.Provide a current registration certificate in the applicant’s name

If you don't have a renewal notice we will accept a screenshot from the Service NSW website.

We do not accept:

  • Registration receipts.
  • Registration checks.
  • Screenshots from the Service NSW app.
  • Your CTP document/certificate.

Step 3.Other supporting documents

Vehicle in the name of a company, friend or relative? Get a signed letter from the registered owner. This letter must be on letterhead if possible and include:

  • Vehicle registration number.
  • Your name.
  • Your home address.
  • Confirmation that you are a company employee, friend or relative and you have full use of the vehicle.

You will also need proof of residency within the Byron Shire in the applicant’s name.

Step 4.Apply online

You will need to:

  1. Sign up for a PayStay account first
  2. Login to our permit portal.

Step 1.Sign up to PayStay to create an account

  • Add your payment details to your PayStay account.
  • Make sure you select a $0 Low Balance Threshold and $0 Top-up Amount.

Step 2.Visit the permit portal

Use your PayStay account email address. From here you can: 

  • Apply for a new permit.
  • Renew a permit. You will not be able to renew if your permit expired over a month ago. 
  • Check your permit details.
  • Change your number plate if you have purchased a new car. 

Step 3.Upload your documents

  • Current copy of your car registration.
  • Proof of residency within the Byron Shire.
  • For the Pensioner discount, a copy of your Centrelink (blue) Pensioner card or DVA card.

Check what documents you may need for your permit type.

Having issues attaching documents?

  1. Check that an Area has been selected. 
  2. Make sure your document is less than 5MB, your file name is short and doesn't include any numbers or symbols.
  3. Ensure your credit card details are up to date in PayStay. 

Step 4.Submit your application 

  • Ensure all fields marked with an asterix* are complete.
  • Tick to confirm you have read and understood the terms and conditions.
  • Submit.

Having issues submitting your application?

  1. Check that your credit card details are up to date in PayStay.
  2. Check you have completed all required fields and accepted Terms and Conditions. 

If you're still unable to submit, email attachments to and we will upload on your behalf.

Step 5.Check your email

You will get an email confirming when your permit application has been approved.

Renewal reminders will be sent from Add this to your address book, or check your junk mail folder, to make sure you receive these emails.

Update or change your details

Step 1.Update your address, email, or credit card details.

  1. Log into your PayStay account
  2. Select "My Details" to update address or email
  3. Select "Payment Details" to update your credit card number, expiry date and CCV

Step 2.Changed your vehicle?

  1. Log into the Permit Portal
  2. Select "Update Vehicle" within your current/active permit.
  3. Select edit vehicle from drop down list
  4. Select the vehicle you would like to update.
  5. Enter your new vehicle Registration and State (some fields such as vehicle type are not mandatory)
  6. Select OK.
