Coast and waterways

Byron Shire’s coast is considered to be among the most picturesque and valued coastal areas in Australia.  The coastal zone is renowned for its biological diversity and natural beauty and supports the highest number of threatened species of conservation significance in New South Wales.  It is both a world-renowned tourist destination and an integral part of Byron Shire's urban landscape.

Coastal planning

Council is working with the community, coastal experts and government agencies to prepare coastal management programs to guide the immediate and longer-term management of our coastline and estuaries.

Coastal projects

Find out about the coastal projects or initiatives we run to manage our coastline.

Estuaries and ICOLLs

Find out about the estuarine systems in our Shire: Brunswick Estuary, Belongil and Tallow Creek. Belongil Creek and Tallow Creek are classified as 'intermittently closed and open lakes or lagoons' or ICOLLs.

Bringing back the Bruns

'Bringing back the Bruns' is a significant environmental program for our Shire, with Council initiating various projects to rehabilitate the health and habitat values of the Brunswick River.
