Byron Shire Council is advising ratepayers that the most recent quarterly rates instalment eNotice contained an error. The eNotices were sent by email from the mailing house that Council uses on Friday 23 January 2026.

Customers will have received an email with the subject line: ‘Your Overdue Rates Reminder Notice’ - when the email should have read: ‘Your Instalment Notice’.

Council would like to reassure residents that:

  • The body of the email and the attached rates notice are correct.
  • The instalment amount shown is accurate and is due on 28 February 2026.
  • The error was limited to the email subject line only.
  • The incorrect subject line has not triggered any Council record of overdue payments.
  • The eNotice email is legitimate and is not a scam.

“We’d like to clarify that the error made by the mailing house is in the subject line of the email only,” Councils Acting Director Corporate and Community Services, Heather Sills said.

“This is an unfortunate mistake that has caused confusion, and we apologise for the distress it may have caused,” Ms Sills said.

Council encourages anyone with concerns about their rates notice to contact our Rates team on (02) 6626 7000 or email rates@byron.nsw.gov.au for more information.
