Bus stops and bus shelters

Why are we upgrading bus shelters?

There are 40 bus stops in the Byron Shire and in July 2017 we started on a program to make sure they are accessible to all members of the community.

We are replacing 11 bus shelters that don't meet:

  1. The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 requirements, or
  2. The Australian Human Rights Commission detailed accessible bus stop guidelines.

These guidelines promote compliance with the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT) 2002 and all existing bus stops should comply with the DSAPT by the 31 December 2022.

Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grant

Council has received a $110,000 grant from the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme (CPTIGS) to upgrade 11 bus shelters.

What is the current status of the project?

January 2019 Survey and concept design of each site
February 2019  Approval to proceed with detailed design of each site
March 2019 Procurement of bus shelter structures
May/June 2019 Detailed design survey
