Koalas in Byron Shire

Where are koalas and their habitat?

In Byron Shire, koalas are sighted at Brunswick Heads, Tyagarah, Myocum, West Mullumbimby, West Byron, Bangalow, Federal, Goonengerry and more.

Report a koala sighting

Report koala sightings in Byron Shire via the Friends of the Koala website or the ‘I Spy Koala’ mobile phone app and identify gender.

Recognise and rescue a koala in trouble

Call 24 hour Koala Rescue on (02) 6622 1233. Signs of a koala needing help are dazed appearance, malnourishment and disease/infection.

Koala habitat protection State Environmental Planning Policy

The new SEPP (Koala Habitat Protection) 2019 affects Byron’s land development and natural resource management with new koala habitat definitions and 42 listed feed trees.

Byron Coast Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management

Byron Shire Council’s adopted Byron Coast Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management 2016 provides a co-ordinated strategy to address key threats impacting coastal koalas.

Our koala conservation projects

Byron Shire’s grant-funded, conservation projects aim to secure our koala populations by reducing threats, protecting/managing/restoring habitat and maintaining healthy, breeding populations.
