In 2021 work started on the development of the Richmond River Coastal Management Program (CMP). This is a long term strategy for the management of the Richmond River catchment which includes the Byron Shire.

Rous County Council’s draft Scoping Study for the Richmond River Coastal Management Plan is open for feedback until 16 December 2022. Find out more about the project and how to get involved below.

Richmond River catchment

Just under half of Byron Shire's waterways drain into the Richmond River including:

  • Coopers Creek.
  • Wilsons Creek
  • Byron Creek
  • Wilson River.

The Richmond River CMP is a 'whole of catchment' approach that recognises how the health of the upper catchment affects the lower reaches of the river.  It includes:

  • Byron Shire
  • Lismore City
  • Ballina Shire
  • Richmond Valley Shire
  • Clarence Valley Shire
  • Kyogle Shire
  • Rous County Council

Once complete, the Coastal Management Program will include actions to restore and maintain the ecological sustainability of the Richmond River estuary.

The program is being coordinated by Rous County Council.

Hydrosphere Consultants is managing the development of the Coastal Management Program on behalf of Councils.
