Bringing back the Bruns

'Bringing back the Bruns' is a program that aims to rehabilitate the Brunswick River.

It involves a number of smaller projects.

Brunswick Riverbank riparian corridor

Our bush regeneration team is working on 12kms of the Brunswick River, clearing the banks of weeds and planting native plants.

Mullumbimby Riverbank restoration

We received a grant from NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI)  to rehabilitate the 1.8km reach of the Brunswick Riverbank from the Mullumbimby Showground to the eastern end of Riverside Drive, Mullumbimby. The project area is Council road reserve and community land.

Benefits of riverbank rehabilitation include:

  • Improves the overall health of the river
  • Native trees provide shade, habitat and food for fish and aquatic life, animals and insects..
  • Improved water quality because riverbanks are stable and not subject to erosion.

Causeway upgrades

With funding from DPI we have upgraded two causeways and removed three fish barriers in the mid-reaches of the Brunswick River.

This opened up 7km of upstream habitat and 27.4km of fish passage to the estuary mouth.

Fish, including bass and mullet now have access to 90% of the river for 100% of the year.  Prior to this project fish could only migrate upstream during floods.
