Railway Park on Jonson Street is in the heart of Byron Bay and features a bespoke playground for children, trees to climb on and places to sit and relax.

The refurbishment of this important public space in 2019 was the first project delivered from the Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan.

History

For decades Railway Park has been a valued public space for the community because of its location in the centre of town, close to the railway station, the bus stop on Jonson Street, the Visitor Centre and the Community Centre.

The termination of train services in 2004 and the closure of the railway station, along with ageing park infrastructure resulted in a significant decline in public use, despite the park being in the heart of the town centre.

In February 2019, Council awarded the construction tender for a project to revitalise Railway Park.  Hundreds of local residents turned out for the official opening of the new community space in November 2019.
