Federal Drive reconstruction is underway

fences across road to show no access

Contractors have set up their site compounds on Federal Drive and work on the reconstruction of the road started this week.

The $23 million project is expected to take some 12 months to finish, a reflection of the complexity of the landslip which happened during the floods in 2022.

Fencing around the site was put up earlier this month and additional barriers are now in place with people asked to stay away from the area while work is underway.

Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said it is important that people observe the safety messages.

“While we understand the road closure is inconvenient to many Federal residents, parents are asked not to use the road as a short-cut to the school bus,” Mr Holloway said.

“All going well Federal Drive will be fully open for traffic by March 2024, however we hopeful that as work progresses, we will be able to get one lane open under traffic control before Christmas which should make things a little easier for residents.

“It has been a long 14 months for locals who are using alternative accesses to get to work, school and the shops and contractors will be working as fast as they can to get the job finished,” Mr Holloway said.
