Six new exciting Byron Shire community events are about to be launched with thanks to funding from the Reconnecting Regional NSW Community Events program.

Thank you to everyone who submitted an Expression of Interest for the Reconnecting Regional Communities funding.

We had 75 fantastic applications, and it was a very hard decision for our assessment panel.

Projects that received funding

The following events will be held over the coming months and will be free and open to everyone to attend:

  • Sidestep (approximately $59,000); a new interactive multi-arts festival for kids and families. The festival will transform a public park into a magical participatory playground.
  • Regeneration (approximately $75,00); reconnecting communities with the joy of bush regeneration. A series of community workshops and a community festival and tree planting.
  • Queer Family’s Rainbow Creatives (approximately $41,000); a program of workshops and events, designed to provide support to a range of workers across the arts sector who were badly affected by the pandemic.
  • Reconnecting Mullumbimby (approximately $35,500) – a series of events featuring art and a community dinner.
  • Bruns River Flicks (approximately $73,000); five consecutive Saturday nights of outdoor films, the program will feature ‘water’ themed movies.
  • After Disaster – Stories, Reflections, Songs (approximately $40,000); two local schools, 200 school children and four local musicians/songwriters will create, perform, and film songs about the recent flood disaster. Songs will be performed at a community concert.

Event dates and more information will be published on the What’s On section of our website and include how to get tickets.

About the funding

The Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Program is aimed at supporting communities and businesses as we emerge and recover from the COVID pandemic.

Byron Shire Council received approximately $360,000 in funding earlier this year, and local community members were encouraged to apply, to host an event.
