Becoming an Australian citizen

Citizenship Ceremonies in 2020/21

Due to COVID-19, recent citizenship ceremonies in Byron Shire have been held virtually. The Government has been holding online citizenship ceremonies via secure video link, to enable people to continue to become Australian citizens during the coronavirus pandemic.

For Australia Day 2021, Byron Shire Council will be holding a face-to-face ceremony with limited numbers at the Cavanbah Centre in Byron Bay. This ceremony will be held in conjunction with an appropriate COVIDsafe plan and a number of safety measures will be in place. Letters have been posted to all eligible conferees for the ceremony on Australia Day 2021.

Applications for Australian citizenship are still able to be accepted during this period, though citizenship interviews and testing have been put on hold. If you are requesting a ceremony please email Department of Home Affairs mail box: virtual.citz.ceremony@homeaffairs.gov.au

Check your eligibility for citizenship on the Department of Home Affairs website or phone 13 1880.

Dates for 2021 Ceremonies are as follows:

  • Tuesday 26 January 2021 (Australia Day)
  • More dates (and virtual or face-to-face format) TBC.
