Natural Burial Ground

On 5 December 2022, Council withdrew its support for a Natural Burial Ground at the Brunswick Valley Sewage Treatment Plant site on Vallances Road, Mullumbimby.

Staff have advertised for expressions of interest to donate or sell land to Council to facilitate a Natural Burial Ground.

Options for land within Clunes and Mullumbimby Cemeteries for a Natural Burial Ground have also been explored.

A report will go to Council in the first quarter of 2024.

What is a natural burial ground?

A natural burial ground is designated land for a natural, environmentally friendly burial option.

Traditionally, they are established in a bush setting with trees and grasslands. An eco-friendly bio-degradable coffin or shroud is used. This allows remains to return to the earth naturally with minimal carbon emissions.

Most natural burial grounds do not have gravestones. They have GPS markers or a rock boulder to identify the individual grave plots.
