Resources for People with Disabilities

We want to make Byron Shire a better place to live or visit for people of all abilities.

We work with people with disability to improve our community. This includes things like:

  • Improving access to community buildings.
  • Making it easier for people to use our parks, beaches and playgrounds.
  • Creating accessible documents and making information easier to understand.

Our Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) explains how we work to support people with disability have greater access to information, services and facilities.

The Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2022 to 2026 was developed with the help of people in our community who live with disability. Download a copy of the Plan.

Progress reports

Each year we report on what we did to improve access and inclusion for people with disability.

Visit Our progress page to download our latest annual report.

We work alongside the Access Consultative Working Group (ACWG) to improve outcomes for people with disability in our community.

The ACWG assists with the implementation of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan and also provides advice on current and relevant local matters related to disability inclusion in the Byron Shire.  It is made up of members of the Byron Shire community with a lived experience of disability as well as individuals that support people with a lived experience of disability.

We are currently seeking nominations for new members.

The ACWG meets bi-monthly.

For those unable to visit the library the Home Library Service maintains a vital connection.

Library staff or volunteers can select reading and audio-visual materials for customers based on their interests and reading preferences. These items are delivered to homes in some areas throughout the region.

For more information about availability and eligibility for this service contact your local library.

We have two beach wheelchairs available for use - one at Main Beach in Byron Bay and the other at Brunswick Heads. Hire of the beach wheelchairs is free.
