Sustainable Visitation Strategy 2020-2030

We are well underway with our process to deliver our Sustainable Visitation Strategy 2020-2030. This Strategy will replace the Byron Shire Tourism Management Plan 2008 -2018(PDF, 962KB).

We conducted an extensive community consultation process that aimed to gather wide-ranging views and ideas from the Byron Shire community about how they’d like to see tourism managed over the next 10 years.

Since March 2019 we have completed the following community engagement activities:

Kitchen Table Discussions

We were overwhelmed with the positive response and interest from the community to our Kitchen Table Discussion Handbook(PDF, 2MB).  We received more than 1200 responses to the 'kitchen table discussions' which gives us a lot of helpful data to set the direction of our 10 year Sustainable Visitation Strategy.

Visitor Focus Groups

Visitor focus groups were held to understand the views and opinions of recent and potential visitors to our Shire, based on the topics presented in the kitchen table discussion handbook.

Community Solutions Panel

The Community Solutions Panel (27 randomly selected residents and rate payers) was presented with a Briefing Book(PDF, 1MB) with the findings from our above engagements, to develop a list of strategic actions that will guide the development of the Strategy.

Draft Vision for the Strategy

Using the feedback received from community engagement, we created a draft vision of our Byron Shire Sustainable Visitation Strategy 2020-2030. The draft vision was available for public comment until 19 December 2019 and will be reported to Council at the 20 February 2020 Planning meeting.

What's next?

The engagement outcomes are now informing the drafting of the Strategy to assist in achieving our project milestones:

  • Draft Strategy to Council - February 2020
  • Draft Strategy opens for public exhibition - February - March 2020
  • Final draft reported to Council - Mid 2020
