Byron YAC's Pocket Rocket take-off!

The Byron Youth Activities Centre (YAC) is relaunching the 2009 Pocket Rocket Youth Band Competition on Saturday 15 August 2009.

Band entrants must be under the age of 25 with the majority of the members living in Byron Shire.

Pocket Rocket has uncovered and supported amazing local young talent in the past such as Natalie and Carlo from Blue King Brown who performed in the original Pocket Rocket, and Luke Kilpatrick who is now in Parkway Drive.

Pocket Rocket is going to be an awesome showcase of our emerging local talent and we invite everyone to come along and support the local young musicians.

The YAC team are excited to be presenting this event for local young people.

The competition starts at 11:00 and goes until we have our winner.

The competition is now in its fourth year and is funded by the Byron Shire Council with fantastic support from local music and entertainment industry including FRACAS studio, the Byron Sound Lounge, the Great Northern, Lennox Point Hotel, Screenworks, Reel Spirit and PMD screen printing offering a suite of fantastic prizes with more to be announced.

Entry forms are available at local High Schools, music outlets or can be downloaded here.

For more information call Belle Arnold or Michael Prigmore on 6685 9341.

National Youth Week

National Youth Week is the largest single celebration of young people on the Australian calendar and has run annually since 2000 as a joint initiative of Australian, State, Territory and Local Governments. The aim of the week is to encourage young Australians aged 12-25 to celebrate their youth, recognise the contributions they make to their communities and provide an opportunity for young Australians to voice concerns or issues relevant to them.

To celebrate Youth Week 2009, young people from across the Byron Shire celebrated with a giant pool party at Mullumbimby. There was a great line-up of acts that included music by Half Nelson and Alice Blue, an Open Mic session, fun on the inflatable obstacle course and a free barbeque. The event also provided an opportunity for local young people to have their say on youth and community issues in the area.
