World Environment Day
Old, Gold & Green - Saturday 8 June 2013
Come celebrate World Environment day on 8 June at Old, Gold & GREEN. This year Byron Shire Council and Brunswick Valley Landcare are putting on a day of FREE workshops in Banner Park Brunswick Heads in conjunction with the Old & Gold Festival.
Meet local experts on biodiversity and sustainability whilst learning all manner of things from food preserving to great native plants for your garden. Bring in your weeds for ID and then watch in amazement as Anaheke Metua shows you how to weave them into useful vessels. Go bird watching with Jan Olley, make your own green cleaning products with Alison Moffit or get the goss on keeping chooks with Andrew Carter.

Golden Bird Buddies Walk 8:30-9:30am

Meet up with Jan Olley at the Brunswick Heads Fish Co-op for an early morning bird watching walk. Jan Olley from Byron Bird Buddies will take you on a walking tour of Brunswick Heads and delight you with her exceptional enthusiasm and knowledge of local birds. |

Weed Waste for Weaving

Caring for our region’s biodiversity through weed management creates a waste resource that can be utilised and up-cycled. Bring in your weeds for identification and then watch as Anaheke Matua transforms typical weed waste in to beautiful and practical woven vessels. |

Composting Workshop
|
Join North East Waste for all the hot tips on making gold medal compost for your garden. Find out about balancing nitrogen and carbon in your compost as well as all the benefits of keeping organic from entering landfill. |

Dyeing with Native Plants
|
Dyeing of cloth was done originally with plant and mineral materials available from our surrounding environment. Come and learn how to dye naturally with native Australian plants. |

Green Cleaning
|
Join Alice Moffit in making your own green cleaning products for around the home. Participants will be able to make and take home samples of some simple, non-toxic and positively brilliant cleaning products. Be sure to arrive early as places in this workshop are limited. |

Walk to Dunecare Site
|
Meet one of Byron Shire Council’s bush regeneration team at the Old, Gold and GREEN tent in Banner Park to be taken on a walking tour of the fantastic dune rehabilitation work at Brunswick Heads. Be inspired by the work that Brunswick Heads Dunecare and Council's bush regeneration team has completed to successfully restore our beautiful coastal landscape. |

Ever wondered what sort of native plants would be good for your backyard? Jo Green from Byron Shire Council and Wendy Gibney from Brunswick Valley Landcare will help you answer that question with a range of fantastic native plants suitable for Byron Shire back yards. All participants receive a free copy of the “My Local Native Garden” book produced by Brunswick Valley Landcare. |

Food Preserving

Come along and learn ways to preserve your surplus of fresh foods from bumper crops. Kim Graham from Byron Shire Council will show you simple ways to preserve food the way our grandparents used to. From bottling tomatoes and mangoes, to dehydrating bananas and earth storage of root vegetables there are many ways to keep foods long after the season has finished. |

Urban Chicken Keeping

Keeping chickens isn’t just for the large landowners. Join Andrew Carter “The Garden Teacher” and some well travelled chooks to hear about the basics of keeping chickens in an urban setting. |
