Weddings, funerals and other events on Council owned and controlled land
If you are planning to have a wedding, funeral, or event on Council owned or controlled land, then you will need to fill in an application for a temporary licence to use Council owned or controlled land.
Please read the following information carefully, and be aware that you may require other approvals from Council, which may incur additional costs.
Proposals for large scale events should be directed to the Duty Planner in the first instance as a development application may be required. Ph: 02 6626 7025.
Application for Temporary Licence to use Council owned or controlled land
Do I need to have a temporary licence to get married on Council or Crown Land in Byron Shire?
Yes. You will need to fill out the application below for weddings, funerals, or other events on Council owned or controlled land. However, not all beaches or reserves in Byron Shire are under the care and control of Byron Shire Council. For information on which beaches and reserves are, please call 02 6626 7044.

When does this application need to be lodged by?
- For a Funeral:
- The completed application form and all required attachments must be lodged with Council at least 3 days prior to the event.
- For a low impact temporary event or Wedding:
- The completed application form and all required attachments must be lodged with Council at least six weeks prior to the event.
- For a major temporary event:
- If the event is major or involves any sort of road closure, the completed application form and all required attachments must be lodged with Council at least 6 months prior to the event.
Council reserves the right to refuse an application that is lodged without sufficient notice.
You will be issued with a temporary licence that must be signed by both you and the Licencing Officer at Byron Shire Council.
