Waste education

The Waste Education Plan, adopted by Council on 3 December 2009 (Resolution 09-1048) serves to assist Council in implementing practical waste education actions.  The Plan is meant to be a guide for Council and an evolving document.

A complete version with full appendices is available at www.byron.nsw.gov.au/publications

The Plan reflects recent developments in relevant waste and education policies and is consistent with and meets the obligations identified within Byron Shire Council's Waste Management Strategy 2007-2009 (BSCWMS) and NSW Environmental Education Plan "Learning for Sustainability 2007-2010".

Did you know that about half of what we throw into the garbage bin is food and garden waste?

Mixed with the rest of our garbage the potential of these organic materials is lost.
Organic materials are usually wasted in landfills where they contribute to environmental problems like the greenhouse effect and water pollution.

Food waste, leaves, grass clippings, soiled newspaper and egg shells are examples of the types of wastes that can be turned into a rich, organic soil conditioner for the garden.
