Volunteers Week 2017- Thank you!

Byron Shire Council Mayor Simon Richardson recently thanked our volunteers at an awards ceremony in Mullumbimby, to acknowledge the significant contribution they bring to our community.

There are over 250 people who are on the books for committees across our Shire.

We acknowledge there are new and emerging groups we don’t even know exist yet!

Our volunteer rate according to the 2013 ABS research is a 25 per cent, above  the national average of 19 per cent.

Mayor Richardson thanked a number of volunteers at our event on Friday May 12, presenting them with a native plant as a small token of our appreciation.

One of the new faces in the crowd was Maureen Lightfoot of South Golden Beach.

She recently moved to the Shire and decided volunteering would be a great way for her to meet new people, as well as offering her skills in finance after retirement.

Maureen is the Treasurer of the Lone Goat Gallery and also volunteers doing the books for the South Golden Beach Hall, the Mullumbimby Civic Memorial Hall and the Byron Community Centre.
