Transport Information

Transport survey

Council conducted a Transport Survey during August/September 2011 which was available online and mailed directly to households within Ocean Shores and Federal.

While the full results of the survey are yet to be reported to Council, preliminary analysis of the survey respondents (ie 378 households, with 63% from Ocean Shores) indicate:

  • a great demand for return of rail services that, along with bus services, provide regular, frequent connections of local towns within Byron shire and opportunity to travel onwards to regional centres such as Lismore, Tweed and Gold Coast
  • respondents’ most often weekly trip is done by car for the purposes of either work or education yet a considerable number would consider an alternative mode of travel if provided
  • as for desired trips, respondents made it clear night time and weekend public transport services are much needed and especially between local towns, for example Ocean Shores-Brunswick Heads-Mullumbimby-Byron Bay-Bangalow
  • a general lack of knowledge/awareness of existing services is apparent, indicating increased and improved efforts to advertise the availability of services is required, for example targeted and specific information relevant for and provided directly to the household.

These same points are to be included in Council's submission to NSW Government discussion paper regarding the formulation of a state wide long term Transport Master Plan, details of which are available at: http://haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au/transportmasterplan

Results of the transport survey are expected to be reported to Council via the Transport Advisory Committee during May/June 2012 at which time the results will be made publicly available.

It is expected the transport survey will assist Council with further advocating and pursuit of funds in regard to public transport services which are a state matter and accordingly any general queries regarding such services can be directed to NSW Transport: www.transport.nsw.gov.au

More specific queries, such as timetable, route and costs can be directed to the service provider as detailed on the NRSDC compiled website www.goingplaces.org.au
