Station Street Affordable Housing Project

Byron Shire Council's Affordable Housing Development Station Street, Mullumbimby

About the Project

Since 2000, Byron Shire Council has considered the potential of the Station Street site for new affordable rental housing.

On 24 April 2008, Council resolved: To develop the site at Station Street Mullumbimby as a mixed use, mixed tenure and mixed income development that will include a significant proportion of affordable housing as well as the potential for some owner-occupied dwellings, commercial, service and/or civic uses.

In late 2008, Council selected planning consultants and architects (Judith Stubbs & Associates and Social Habitat) to develop three Concept Plans for the development of the site.

  • A Project Reference Group has been formed, with members who have experience in public and community housing, architecture and development, local real estate, aged care and local government. The project reference group will have 4 workshops from December 2008-April 2009 to give feedback as the designs are developed.
  • The Byron Shire community will have opportunities to give input on the designs at an on-site workshop on February 2, and when the draft Concept Plans are ready for review (Date of event to be advised).

The Concept Plans will be presented to Council in mid-2009. Depending on the feasibility of the project, Council is expected to choose a preferred option and release an expression of interest for partners to undertake the project.
