Responsible pet ownership

Byron Shire Council is launching a new competition for our local primary school students.  We’re hoping the calendar competition will be an annual event that promotes local schools and highlights important issues in our community.  The theme for the 2018 calendar is RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP.

The project is funded by the Council and the calendars will be printed and available free of charge at a range of places around the Shire including libraries and will be a year-long reminder about the importance of being a responsible pet owner.

We’re hoping our local primary schools will support this exciting new competition by either setting aside some time in class for students to produce an entry for the calendar, or encouraging them to do it at home and bring it to school.  It’s Byron Shire Council’s aim to make this calendar competition an annual event that children and residents look forward to every year.

We have compiled a kit for your school including information about the competition, important dates, key messages about responsible pet ownership, judging and most importantly – a template your students should use.

We understand that not every child owns a pet so we encourage those children to imagine the pet they would like, or perhaps it is an animal that belongs to a neighbour or friend, and draw a picture that captures one of the Responsible Pet Ownership messages.

If you have any questions please call Malcolm Hamilton, our Animal Enforcement Officer, on 6626 7146 or Annie Lewis, Media and Communications Coordinator, on 6626 7320.

We’re hoping you will support this project.
