Good Access is Good Business

3 December 2009

Byron Shire Council's Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (2008-2013) demonstrates Council's commitment to improving access for all in the Shire.

In Australia, 3.9 million people, or nearly 20 per cent of the population, have a disability. These may be temporary (e.g. a sports injury) or they may be permanent. They may be something that is brought on by ageing (e.g. poor vision, hearing or mobility) or the person may have had the disability from birth.

Other people may have occasional mobility difficulties - e.g. pushing a pram or shopping trolley, escorting an elderly person or a toddler. Even a delivery person may have difficulties moving around because of changing levels or blockages on the footpath (e.g. A-frame signs, displays of goods, tables and chairs).

Council wants small business and retailers in Byron Shire to be more accessible for people with a disability, older people, people with prams and small children. To meet this goal, the "Good Access is Good Business'"guide was developed. The guide is an initiative of the Byron Shire Council Access Project Reference Group, based on Missed Business, a collaborative Project between Marrickville Council and the Australian Human Rights Commission.

The "Good Access is Good Business" guide provides information about the benefits of diversifying customer base, provides easy to read practical tips and suggestions for improving access for all customers as well as helping meet the mandatory requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.
