Byron Shire Council Celebrates National Organics Week

National Organics Week runs from Saturday 11 to Sunday 19 October 2008. The purpose of Organics Week is to increase awareness about organic produce, products and systems and to accelerate the uptake of sustainable production practices in the wider Australian community.

Byron Bay pool owner fined for non-compliance over swimming pool fence

A ByronBay resident was convicted on Friday in the ByronBay local court for failing to maintain a backyard swimming pool fence in accordance with the Swimming Pool Act 1992. The person was convicted and fined $700. In addition, professional costs of $1000 and court costs of $73 were also awarded against her.

Works to protect threatened species underway at Brunswick Heads

Byron Shire Council’s Bush Regeneration team have recently begun works to protect threatened species at Brunswick Heads.  The team identified the endangered Spiny-leaved Gardenia (Randia moorei), only known from six sites in the Shire, whilst preparing a regeneration action plan for the site.

Change of date for disclosure of political donations and gifts - now to take effect from 1 October 2008

The New South Wales Government has delayed the introduction of new requirements for the disclosure of political donations in relation to both applicants and people making submissions in relation to those applications.

The date for commencement has now been set for 1 October 2008, rather than commencing on 15 September as councils had recently been advised.

Council responds to misleading election advertising

Byron Shire Council provides the following information in response to incorrect information published by Byron United in a recent advertisement regarding the amount of Council’s borrowings, debt management and revenue raised from Special Rate increases over the last five years.

Byron Shire Disability Access and Inclusion Plan adopted by Council

Byron Shire Council adopted the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2008-2013 at its meeting on 28 August 2008 to ensure ongoing improvement in access to services and facilities. The Plan has been compiled in consultation with the Council’s Access Committee, community stakeholders and Council officers who will have responsibility for delivering key actions.

Byron Shire Council Places Tourism Management Plan on Public Exhibition

At its meeting of 28 August, Byron Shire Council resolved to place a draft of the Tourism Management Plan on public exhibition.  The strategies and actions in the plan are proposed to guide the development, management and marketing of tourism over the medium to long-term.

Disclosing political donations and gifts - new obligations on developers and community members

The NSW Government has introduced new requirements applying to applicants for, and people wanting to make submissions to, development applications, LEP, DCP and Developer Contribution Plan matters. The new requirements apply to development applications and submissions lodged on or after 15 September 2008.

Australia’s largest animal welfare education mobile unit, the RSPCA’s ‘EMU’ will delight school children during a tour of the Byron Shire region starting 8 September through to 12 September, with a visit to teachers and students at three different schools within the Shire.

Footsteps Towards Sustainability At Durrumbul

Durrumbul Public School is focusing their attention on sustainability through a partnership with Byron Shire Council, Solo Resource Recovery and the North East Waste Forum (NEWF). The group is working together to increase the skills and knowledge of students and their local school community to make informed decisions about ways to minimise the impact we have on the environment and also to be able to undertake sustainable waste practices.

Council's Solar Hot Water Campaign Shows Solar Continues to Shine in Byron Shire

The recent Byron Shire Community Solar Hot Water Campaign resulted in 95 households installing solar hot water systems over a two month period. The campaign offered an innovative model in which Byron Shire residents were able to receive discounts from suppliers that had been negotiated by Council.
