Welcome to the latest edition of the Byron Shire Sustainability E-Newsletter!

8 October 2010

Byron Shire Council's 2010 National Organics Week event 'Soil, Seed, Society' will be held on Friday 8 Oct. from 6 - 8pm in Council Chambers, Mullumbimby.

The event is our annual celebration of local and organic food systems and a great opportunity to share knowledge and raise awareness of the importance of supporting local food from 'soil to society'. The evening will feature the short film 'An Urban Orchard' that documents innovative community food projects around Adelaide, followed by a guest presentation by international local food system expert, Robina McCurdy and an interactive panel session with a range of organic farmers, retailers and local food experts.

Brunswick Valley Community Centre goes Solar!

Byron Shire Council has installed a new 5kW solar PV system at the Brunswick Valley Community Centre located on South Beach Road, Brunswick Heads. Mayor Jan Barham ‘switched on’ the new solar system on 12 September.

The new solar system will generate approximately 7,700 kilowatt hours of clean renewable energy and eliminate 7.25 tonnes of greenhouse gas annually. "This equates to removing 10 cars from the road permanently or planting 430 trees every year,” Mayor Barham said.

The Brunswick Valley Community Centre is the first Council building to go solar and was 'switched on’ as part of Council’s Sustainable House Weekend.
